December 28th, 2025 - What an awesome date for a wedding! Sandwiched between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, Mr. & Mrs. Oliver will have a lot to celebrate this time of the year! Family and friends primarily traveled from New York and Alabama to attend this awesome wedding. This was the second time performing at The Barn at Shady Lane, which is located in Bessemer, Alabama, just outside of Birmingham, Alabama.

The husband and wife owners of The Barn at Shady Lane were a joy to work with! They are musicians themselves, so they are by default awesome, our opinion LOL. Michael (owner) spoke to us at how important the band is to a wedding and shared his experience working with all types at his venue. He mentioned the importance of couples not hiring a band that has hundreds (even thousands) of members in their roster, which acts as more of an “Empire” of musicians that ultimately meet for the first time at your wedding. He also mentioned the importance of sound management - the ability to adjust the sound to each room’s acoustics.

Mr. and Mrs. Oliver requested the band play their first dance and family dances live. They picked some cool songs:

First Dance: “The Way You Look Tonight”

Father/Daughter Dance: “My Little Girl” by Tim McGraw

Mother/Son Dance: “Forever Now” by Michael Buble

According to the couple’s music questionnaire, the bride’s family, being primarily based in the northeast, loves Billy Joel and Frank Sinatra, so we definitely leaned into this. The groom’s side, primarily from the south, seemed to favor country music: Skynyrd, Chris Stapleton, Hank Williams Jr., Garth Brooks, Zac Brown, etc. Further, there were requests for classic wedding Motown tunes, classic rock, 90s throwbacks, a couple hip-hop tunes, and some top-40 hits from past decades we all know and love. In this way, both families, from the north and south, came together and shared a night of music blended into one “Cosmic gumbo” (‘I Think You Should Leave’ reference). To toot our own horn, that’s what we do: dial in your musical preferences to best fit your love story, your friends, and your family. We even played a couple slow dance tunes, which usually gives the older folks a chance to share the dance floor with less rambunctious energy.

A beautiful end to 2025, we look forward to a new year of making memories and spreading love and music to every event we play! Be on the lookout for more stories and gig recaps. Cheers and much love from your VCS family!
